A Bittersweet Find: There's a Self-Hosting Podcast and It Just Ended

By Ricardo N Feliciano ·

I came across a podcast about self-hosting aptly named, Self-Hosted. It never occurred to me that there would be a podcast dedicated to the subject but here we are. 😊 The joy of this find quickly came to a halt when I read that the podcast was ending.

It’s okay though because I think this podcast is worth sharing.

About the show

The Self-Hosted podcast appears to be right in line with the ethos of Linodians. Here’s a description pulled straight from their website:

Discover new software and hardware to get the best out of your network, control smart devices, and secure your data on cloud services. Self-Hosted is a chat show between Chris and Alex two long-time “self-hosters” who share their lessons and take you along for the journey as they learn new ones.

I listened to episode 150 to get a feel for the show and I enjoyed it. There were some inside jokes that I would probably have gotten if I was a regular listener. A highlight for me was a moment during the episode where one of the co-host referred to non-techy or non-self-hosters as “muggles”. These are my kind of people.

What now?

The show may be over but the story doesn’t have to be. I have two thoughts on what to do now that the podcast is over.

Listen to the backlog

The 150 episode podcast isn’t going anywhere. Sure, not every episode will be a gem. I imagine there’s going to be current events topics that won’t play well on replay but there’s plenty of good content and knowledge to be had.

Perusing through the podcast’s guest list I found two… umm, personalities?, that I love to listen to, Alan Pope and Jeff Geerling. The former is a DevRel person of Canonical and Anchor fame while the latter is a YouTube creator and blogger who builds the Linux kernel so often he has a t-shirt about it.

Start a new podcast

There has been conversation about the podcast ending in several corners of the Internet. On Reddit I saw many people lamenting that it’s over, surprised it existed (me), or wondering what to listen to now. That last thought caught the attention of one of the co-hosts, Alex.

There were mentions of other podcasts on this topic but all seem to have gone dark at this point. Alex mentions, “It’s time one of y’all stepped up!”. So who’s interested in starting a new podcast? I am curious to see if there’s a podcast out there that we’ve all missed, or if someone is thinking of starting a self-hosting related one of their own. Heck, maybe a Linodians podcast?
